How to Cope with Sorrow and Sadness
There have different ways for people to deal with sorrow. Sometimes we face it directly and feel all the feelings, and other times we try to divert our attention.
I like to think of sorrow as a glass enclosure that surrounds us. At some moments, the glass enclosure is impermeable, and we can't see it, however, we feel suffocated, uncomfortable, and heavy in it.
On other days, the glass enclosure opens up some small holes and gives us some fresh air, making us up. We can go for walks in the park, work out at the gym, and talk with friends.
However, there are days when we want to break out of this glass enclosure! We don't want to be tied down in any way, attend a live show, sway to the beat and celebrate with a band, just like we used to do in the pleasant old days, before sorrow came along, of course.
Here I need to claim that there is no right or wrong way to deal with sorrow.
I have exchanged thoughts of coping with sorrow with many people and see how people like to pretend that everything is fine while burying all their pain inside. However, I have also been shocked and inspired by the many meaningful and healthy ways to commemorate and celebrate loved ones when they face sorrow.
Here are the acts that are considered courageous. It's the courage to feel, heal and move forward with meaning.
InsightTimer has an entire meditation topic dedicated to sorrow.
Pets can be a fantastic emotional support for human beings since they provide silent companion and kiss when a human is feeling down.
Music is therapeutic and has been a tool used for healing for centuries.
Exercise can help to escape the pain and build your strength, whatever, it’s good for people to do it.
Dr. Ryan said sorrow is the last iteration of love when we see that we can accept sorrow as a way to honor, cherish and respect the person we have lost.
It's also helpful to derive meaning from that loss. What do you appreciate most about the person you loved? What can you learn from their lives? If they were kind to those less fortunate, perhaps you can try to incorporate that into your life.
If they were a really good listener, maybe you can hone your skills to honor their memory. If you are making positive changes in your life as a way to continue their legacy and improve the world in the smallest way possible, then you are honoring their memory in the best way possible."
Now, how will you honor your loved ones?
